Fried sesame balls are one of the most classic dim sum (a variety of small, bite-sized dishes traditionally served with tea) you can get in a Chinese restaurant. Like many other dishes, I never realised how easy it is to make these at home until one day I absolutely craved it and decided to give it a try. It took me about 15 minutes from start to finish, and they tasted just like how I remember in an authentic restaurant. 100% restaurant quality.
Glutinous rice flour is a common ingredient used in Chinese food, mostly during festivals such as Chinese New Year and used in making dim sum. You can get it quite easily on Amazon or in the local Chinese shop, just ask for “糯米粉”.
Ingredients
Makes 10 small sesame balls
100g glutinous rice flour
45g granulated sugar
75ml water
vegetable oil for deep frying
A handful of white sesame seeds
Method
- Bring the water to a boil and stir in the sugar until it’s all dissolved.
- In a small bowl, slowly add the water to the glutinous rice flour and stir to combine. shape into a smooth dough with your hands. if the dough is too dry, add a little water.
- Divide the dough into small round balls.
- Wet each ball with a bit of water and make sure every bit of it is wetted. Roll them one by one in a small bowl of white sesame seeds.
- Heat vegetable oil on medium heat to 175°C. While you’re deep frying, push the sesame balls down, roll them around a bit so air can go in and the sesame balls will expand in size. Fry them for 6-7 minutes until golden.
- Serve hot.
