Teriyaki Tofu

Cauldron Vegan Tofu Block is the only tofu I’ll buy in the UK for firm tofu. Because it’s so close to authentic Asian tofu, I don’t even buy tofu from Asian supermarkets anymore.

Ingredients

1 block of firm tofu, about 400g

Teriyaki sauce

2 tablespoons soy sauce (I use half light soy and half dark soy for the colour)
2 tablespoons sake
2 tablespoons mirin
1 tablespoon sugar

Method

  1. Pat dry tofu and cut into cubes.
  2. Shallow-fry tofu for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oil and set aside.
  3. Add teriyaki sauce ingredients into a small pan and heat on medium-low heat until it thickens. If it doesn’t thicken, add a mixture of 2 tablespoons water and 1 tablespoon cornstarch and continue to simmer until the sauce reaches a thick consistency.
  4. Add tofu back in the pan and stir to coat evenly with the sauce. Serve and garnish with a sprinkle of Japanese seaweed, chopped spring onion or sesame seeds.
